Although the art of hand engraving on metal dates back to the 1st millennium, its practice became a relatively lost art form until only recently when skilled craftsmen began creating this type of jewelry again. Each piece is uniquely designed, painstakingly transferred to the metal and then engraved by hand. The process of hand engraving is slow and meticulous and the engraver must give his full concentration, as one slip of the graver can ruin the piece. There are many different and distinct design styles of engraving that are descriptive in both name and design, such as "Bulino" or bank note. If stones are planned as part of the design, they are set after the engraving is completed.
